SUPERFOOD - The Garage, Highbury & Islington, London

It’s Friday night and Dave, Mick, my son Joe and me are washing down hipster chicken burgers with craft beer as a preliminary to one of my most anticipated gigs of the year.

Birmingham’s SUPERFOOD are the brilliant indie pop band that mysteriously got no traction from their superb first album, nearly putting them out of business. Now they are back with album number 2 and it’s a belter.

The audience is young and so up for it they practically explode as Dom Ganderton yells “Lets do this!” and storms into super-funk new album opener “Where’s The Base Amp?”. The set that follows has an exhilarating party-feel with the new album joyously executed, augmented with a sprinkling of old gems.

It all ends with the band and the fans visibly elated.

Will they finally get the recognition they deserve? I flipping hope so – the youthful average age of the audience bodes well for them (apart from me, Dave and Mick – not their ideal fans but at least we throw money at the vinyl and the merch).

I loved this gig. I left feeling woozy.
