MARIAN HILL - The Scala, Kings Cross, London

I’d be a bit surprised if the words “Electronica” and “Fan” showed up near each other in my obituary but there is always an exception to the rule. In my case it’s my addiction to this wonderful band from Philadelphia.

Tonight I am on my own, as I was last time they played, so nobody else I know can testify as to how perfect this act is at what it does – which is a sensual, rhythmic, and elegant fusion of electronica, jazz and r’n’b played with economy and a little bit of theatrical flourish.

I first saw them two years ago at Palm Door in Austin when they were pretty unknown. Recently they had a track (Down) selected for an ad by Apple. It led the Shazam chart for months and has well over 90 million plays on Spotify – not the most credible route to success but I don’t suppose they are moaning.

Anyway, it was an immaculate gig and if you can catch them in a small venue I’d recommend going.
